DREW PERKINS
FURNITURE MAKER

about

I am a furniture designer and maker with my own workshop in Washington, DC. My goal is to make beautiful, unique, and durable objects that display a quiet gracefulness. The subtle joinery and elegant lines of each piece should draw you in, adding to your enjoyment. And the surfaces should be inviting to the touch.
I developed a deep interest in craftsmanship and design at an early age. Growing up in New England, I spent many hours working on wooden boats. Those formative years gave me a deep appreciation of the incredible properties of wood, the importance of good design, and the beauty of a meticulously applied finish. But it was not until I left my career in law that I had the opportunity to delve into the craft of furniture making. At that time, I studied furniture making at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport, Maine, from several world-renowned artisans. There I began to explore and develop my own design aesthetic.
For me, good design incorporates contemporary elements into diverse traditional forms in a manner that creates a work with inherent design integrity. My journey of discovery to develop and refine a design aesthetic that meets these criteria is an ongoing process of exploration of new and traditional techniques and ideas.
